Alopecia Awareness Week
30-Sep-2009This week was Alopecia Awareness Week
Over the years working as a Cosmetic Tattoo Specialist, I have had many clients who suffer from different forms of Alopecia seeking help from me to create eyebrows for them and also eyeliner to enhance their eyes when they have lost all their eyelashes.
I have had Alopecia clients come in their early teens with their parents as they have wanted a more permanent solution especially when the teens are heading off to high school and Alopecia clients of all ages. Often Alopecia clients are wanting a more permament solution for their eyebrows as it takes time putting these on everyday.
What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a condition affecting humans, in which hair is lost from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it cause bald spots on the scalp, especially in the first stages, it is sometimes called spot baldness. In 1%-2% of cases, the condition can spread to the entire scalp or the entire epidermis.
Alopecia areata occurs in people who are apparently healthy and have no skin disorder. Initial presentation most commonly occurs in the late teenage years, early childhood, or young adaulthood, but can happen with people of all ages.
There are different types of Alopecia:
Alopecia Areata - patches of hair loss
Alopecia Totalis - hair loss of a certain section of the body
Alopecia Universalis - total head and body hair loss
What areas are affected?
The scalp is the usual area, but the beard in men, and eyelashes or eyebrows may be affected alone, or together with scalp hair loss. In the uncommon severe forms, all body hair may be lost as well.
